How healthy is your plant and vehicle fleet management?

Robert Wilson, Manager IPWEA FLEET

We all know the benefits of proactively looking after our health. For example, by having a routine check-up with our doctor, we can identify areas that need attention before they become bigger problems.

In a similar way, it is important to periodically review our fleet management systems. By doing a fleet management 'health check' we are:

  • Being proactive
  • Identifying gaps before an issue occurs
  • Working to continuously improve our operation
  • Demonstrating to management that we are actively managing the fleet

Firstly, a simple self-assessment health check whereby you can run down a list of basic requirements to manage a fleet such as policies, procedures and practices. You can then identify any gaps and work to close them.

Secondly, and perhaps more importantly, we have introduced a third-party assessment undertaken in conjunction with IPWEA specialists. This has the benefit of bringing in an independent perspective to the review and gives you a validated and robust assessment. The third-party assessment includes the provision of a review report, detailed assessment results and a graphical scorecard. Undertaking the third-party assessment enables you to identify opportunities for improvement in your fleet management processes and measure improvement over time. It’s a great way to drive continuous improvement based on an objective and prioritised approach.

As we move to the end of 2017 I wish everyone a happy and safe Festive Season and a great start to 2018.
