Two key pieces of Victorian legislation are beginning to make their presence felt across the public works sector and IPWEA Victoria is engaging directly with state government agencies to keep our members up-to-date with the changes they’ll bring:
Professional Engineers Registration Act 2019
Consumer Affairs Victoria will be releasing a series of documents for public consultation on 26 August including:
- Guidance on key terms and provisions of the Act (e.g. professional engineering services, direct supervision, extraterritorial application, areas of engineering and prescriptive standards)
- Proposed Professional Engineers Registration Regulations 2020
- Proposed Code of Conduct for Professional Engineers
- Cost recovery options
The documents will be available from here and submissions are required by 7 October. We will be presenting a Registration Update webinar on 8 September to outline the above and provide an opportunity for discussion.
Local Government Act 2020
Local Government Victoria has commenced a co-design activity “...to initiate and inform sector dialogue and engagement on the development of an integrated strategic planning, reporting and monitoring framework arising from the requirements of the Act”.
We’re keen to ensure the framework properly integrates the 10-year Asset and Financial Plans required by the Act with all other strategic planning documents and have involved IPWEA experts in the co-design process. More information will be provided as available however please direct any comments to david.hallett@ipwea.org in the meantime.
In other news, the State of Disaster recently declared by the Victorian government restricts operations across business and industry including civil works. IPWEA Victoria partner the CCF Victoria is providing daily updates for sector stakeholders and detailed information is available from the DHHS website. Please observe the restrictions applicable to your projects and ensure you and your staff, consultants, contractors and suppliers are all working safely.
I extend my very best wishes to the many people who continue to support Victoria’s civil construction sector at this difficult time.
