The Balancing Act

I don’t get it! Why does the organisation want to transition the entire fleet to EVs right now?

I mean, I get why EVs are so important to the environment and all. But have any of the Execs driven on a long journey beyond the initial charge?

“Let’s see…mapped my journey in PlugShare. Yep. All good! Now I know all the ChargeFox stations for the next 1,200 kilometres. Let’s go!

Hmmm, battery low so first stop. Oops…charging station down. Whaaat!! Oh no! Better drive to the next one another 120 km down the road (sweat rolling down face).

Got there. Thank God! Um, 10 cars in front of me. Better see what’s going on. Got to wait my turn? Gentleman’s agreement who’s next? Whaaat!! Okay, I’ll talk to a few of the grey nomads. Tick tick…2 hours later. Slow charger and topped up. Got about a 50% charge…let’s go to the next charging station…unbelievable!”

Bottomline is – until Australia has sufficient and more reliable infrastructure – fleets need a balance of fit-for-purpose EVs and ICE vehicles depending upon the journey requirements. Let’s please bring some common-sense into the transition process!

To stop our Anonymous Fleet Manager (AFM) blowing a gasket, we created Internal Combustion, a monthly column for fleet-related rants that lets him blow off some steam. Got a fleet gripe you'd like to get his opinion on? Email the editor who will pass it on to AFM... when he's in a good enough mood, that is.
