Topic: Proxy Switches on tipper tail gates:

Lee: As a result of more than one incident, Workplace Health and Safety have asked us to look into the installation of tailgate proximity switches to alert the driver if the tailgate is still open after the material dump/load

Yes, absolutely the driver should be manually checking, however, in the interests of consistency between organisations I have to reach out and see if this is an avenue other fleet managers are exploring as an additional control.

Thanks in advance for any advice/information you can provide.

Mark: Hello Lee,

We have a pressure switch fitted in-line with the pneumatic actuator that illuminates a green LED in the dash when the tailgate locks are engaged (closed) and a RED LED if the tailgate locks are open.

I expect that fitting a proximity switch or micro switch to the tailgate will cause a lot of grief as it likely that the switch or cabling will be damaged often.

We have a proximity switch to indicate if the tipper body is raised above 50 mm.

Cheers,

Mark Knezovich, Moreton Bay Regional Council

Lee: Thanks for the information, Mark, really appreciate it.

We are potentially going to meet with a supplier to discuss in more detail in relation to the connections/back up etc so will raise this and see what the response is.
