By The Electric Vehicle Council
The Electric Vehicle Council has launched the State of Electric Vehicles 2020 report, which provides an annual snapshot of the electric vehicle landscape in Australia.
The key findings are as follows:
- Sales accelerated rapidly: In 2019, 6,718 electric vehicles were sold, up 200% from 2,216 in 2018. In the first half of 2020, sales remained steady with 3,226 electric vehicles sold.
- Shifting consumer sentiment: A survey of 2,902 Australians for the State of EVs 2020 shows that 56% of respondents would now consider purchasing an electric vehicle as their next vehicle.
- Charging ahead: There are now 1,950 standard charging stations and more than 350 fast charging stations across Australia.
- Consumer choice is growing: There are now 28 electric vehicle models in Australia, and eight of these are priced under $65,000.
- Battery supply chain potential untapped: Australia could be much more involved along the battery supply chain - policy is needed to support investment in minerals processing, battery component manufacturing and battery recycling.
- Government policy scorecard: Our new scorecard rates the Federal, state, and territory governments against a range of effective and evidence-backed policies to encourage and support electric vehicle uptake.
