To Employ or not to Employ
By: Anonymous Fleet Manager
Well the penny is finally starting to drop and we are taking much more time in the recruitment process to ensure the right person is being employed rather than the most qualified.
In the past we have looked at the person with the most skills/qualification and not the behavioural side of the equation.
Due to the heavily weighted Industrial Relations (IR) Laws, which appear to favour the employees, we are now focusing on the best fit for the team whilst still meeting the technical aspects of the job.
The feeling is it is much better to get the right fit and upskill rather than get the most qualified and performance manage.
If you are not doing this then it is suggested you start real soon because the IR avenue is a tough road to go down.
To stop our Anonymous Fleet Manager (AFM) blowing a gasket, we created Internal Combustion, a monthly column for fleet-related rants that lets him blow off some steam. Got a fleet gripe you'd like to get his opinion on? Email the editor who will pass it on to AFM... when he's in a good enough mood, that is.
