Light Fleet Management Policies

Hello everyone
I was wondering if there are any good examples of Light Fleet Council Policies and/or Frameworks to share with us? In particular interested in optimisation and change over.
Thank you!

Hi Suzette,

The IPWEA best practice Plant & Vehicle Management Manual has a section on light vehicles including a very good example policy document in the Appendices provided courtesy of Byron Shire and information on optimum replacement.

We also have the online light fleet comparison tools, which provides optimum replacement information. You can compare the whole of life costs for up to nine vehicles. The output chart shows both the WOL comparion and optimum replacement timing. Your organisation would need to be a subscriber to the IPWEA Fleet program to gain access to the tools.

Visit www.ipwea.org/fleet for more information or email me at ross.moody@ipwea.org.

Hi Suzette,

I can share policies but you will have to be more specific, i.e. is what you are after about the conditions of use whether private or Council, asset management protocols? or about changeover points.

If you are looking for C/O points each Council maybe different, it depends on factors involving yearly use, types of use (rural or urban), backup and servicing, penalty costs for downtime, and types of vehicles. In all cases you should be replacing at optimum renewal point which is determined by these factors, i.e. lowest TOTAL yearly cost estimate.  Some vehicles maybe 4yrs/80,000km while others it maybe 5yrs/120,000km ... so it depends!

Try to keep the "everyone likes a new car" thoughts out of it and go with science. The IPWEA Fleet Management Manual will assist in helping you to work out optimum point for your application.

Let me know if you need more assistance.
