Just how good is your fleet team at driving?

Do you know how much driver error cost your fleet department every year?

While the number of crashes may be minimal, the number of small incidents within your council could, over time, cost your department considerably.

“Just by teaching people to think about the task at hand, you can save a little money,” says XDrive Head Trainer Stephen Haughey.

“Obviously is somebody races up to the traffic lights, these things translate into more wear and tear on the vehicle. All these little incidents add up to a large cost.”

According to Haughey, most people can drive reasonably well, but the problem is “we do not put the effort into driving well all the time”.

Driver error is responsible for 90 per cent of all incidents and collisions in Australia, according to the National Motor Vehicle Crash Causation Survey Report, April 2008.

Driver safety training by Haughey will be part of IPWEA's one-day Plant and Vehicle Management Workshops, which will be held across Australia in November.

In addition, IPWEA has partnered with Haughey to offer members an online training course designed to help drivers refresh their driving skills.

The course comprises 24 training modules, which participants have unlimited access to over the course of 12 months.

The course is initially aimed at people whose role includes driving, but Haughey says the course would be beneficial to anyone who drives.

It allows managers within the fleet department to monitor the progress of their staff and provide any underperforming staff with one-on-one road training.

“We are using the course to keep people up to date and thinking about road safety,” says Haughey. “For those people who want it, we’ll take them out on the road and show them what they need to know.”

More details about the online driver training course will be revealed shortly. To find out more, come along to the one-day Plant & Vehicle Management Workshops.
