JCB attempting to claim ‘world’s fastest earthmover’ title

The JCB GT Backhoe will make a rare Australian appearance in October as it tours the country and attempts to set a speed record.

Australians will have four opportunities to view the 1000 horsepower JCB GT, which can reach top speeds of around 120mph (193kph).

The machine was built by JBC at its Staffordshire factory in the UK in the late 1980s.

It is powered by a supercharged V8 engine and equipped with a belt-driven supercharger and a pair of four barrelled Holley carbs. It exhales via eight, 20-inch straight-through exhausts.

A trained driver will make the first record attempt alongside V8 supercars at the Supercheap Auto Bathurst 1000. The driver will attempt to drive a 250m-stretch in less than four seconds. The time will be submitted to the Guinness Book of Records for consideration.

The GT Backhoe last appeared on these shores at the Australian Forumla One Grand prix in 1990.

Demonstrations will be held at the following events:

3-4 Oct: Deni Ute, Deniliquin
9-12 Oct: Supercheap auto Bathurst 1000
24-26 Oct: Gold Coast 600
31 Oct – 2 Nov: Australian Nationals, Sydney Dragway NSW
5-7 Dec: Sydney 500, Sydney NSW
