Nissan unveils smartphone-powered fleet management system

Nissan has unveiled an IT system for light commercial vehicles that uses smartphones to provide safety and performance data to both drivers and fleet managers in real time.

Demonstrated for the first time along with other innovations and breakthroughs at the month-long ‘Nissan 360’ event (Aug 19 – Sep 15) in California, USA, the new system will enable fleet managers to remotely monitor maintenance information, as well as driving behaviour, while the vehicles are on the road. Drivers will also receive real-time information to help them operate their vehicles more safely.

The service works by linking a smartphone, or other connected device, wirelessly to the vehicle's IT system – while, Nissan insists, maintaining a high level of security. Data is then uploaded using the mobile network to the cloud, where fleet managers can access it remotely.

Features of the system include:

Services for drivers
  • Notify when the vehicle exceeds pre-set speed
  • Eco-driving and smart driving diagnosis results
  • Automated notification of elective vehicle charging spots when battery capacity is low (applicable for electric vehicles)
Services for vehicle operation managers
  • Function for confirming vehicle location
  • Vehicle maintenance information (maintenance timing based on distance driven)
  • Eco-driving and smart driving diagnosis results of each driver
  • Function for confirming charging status and battery condition (applicable in the case of EVs)
While it is still too early for any information about the planned roll out of the system, Nissan says it aims to install it in light commercial vehicles being considered for future launches.
