NAMS.AU Chairman Peter Way talks us through his insights from the IPWEA webinars on implementing ISO 55001 as IPWEA announces it is offering the recorded training for viewing.
The recent IPWEA webinars on implementing ISO 55001 asset management System Standards and testing alignment with the standards by using the maturity assessment tools developed by IPWEA, provided some interesting insights.
There were just over 70 participants from a wide range of sectors around Australia and internationally and a number of polls and impromptu surveys were carried out during the webinars. The following summarises some of the key findings that came out:
• Most are looking to apply the standards for the benefits they believe will be achieved through better business practice. Some are interested in moving towards third-party certification now or in the future.
• Many are already using a variety of other ISO type standards (e.g. quality, environment, risk)
• Most are users of the IIMM and other IPWEA resources.
• Most are well advanced in having asset management documentation developed and many felt they would have a satisfactory Strategic Asset Management Plan (SAMP) currently in place.
• Most had asset management plans but acknowledged these could be improved.
• Outsourcing of asset management or related services was quite low and many acknowledged there were weaknesses in how well outsourcing could be managed.
• Ensuring the necessary competencies are available to meet the tasks involved were recognised by most as a challenge.
• Most indicated they had a strong degree of commitment to asset management from top management in their organisations.
• Most acknowledged they could benefit from better asset condition data.
• There was little thought at this stage of the possible benefits of lower insurance premiums if organisations were applying the standards.
The maturity assessment online tools will allow organisations to monitor their degree of alignment against the ISO 55001 asset management requirements. Importantly, the tools incorporate a risk-based approach to allow organisations to assign importance to meeting targets over a period of ongoing development. In this way they can prioritise actions arising that will foster continuous improvement of their asset management activities.
The maturity assessments provide a variety of report formats for ease of understanding the results. They can be done by self-assessment but are generally more beneficial if overseen by a knowledgeable independent third party.
IPWEA intends to make the recordings of the webinars available for purchase which will include ongoing access over a 12 month period to the online maturity assessment tools.
