High fire standards protect visitor centre

A new council building in the Eurobodalla Shire is still standing despite the intense fires that surrounded it at new year, thanks to construction standards talking into account its bushland location.

Bushfire has devastated large parts of Eurobodalla in southern NSW, including in and around Mogo. Although fire swept through the Eurobodalla Regional Botanic Garden at the peak of the crisis, the most recently constructed and renovated building survived intact.

The new building – including visitor centre, herbarium, café and education hub – was constructed to high fire standards, using selected hardwoods, with these conditions in mind. It was handed over to ERBG Manager Michael Anlezark on Friday 20 December and has yet to be officially opened.

There has been extensive fire to the grounds. Other damage will be assessed as soon as it is safe to do so, and resources permit. For safety reasons, the site will remain closed to the public and volunteers until further notice.
