The Professional Engineers Registration Bill passed through Victoria’s Upper House on 27 August.

Registration Bill

If enacted, the new law will enforce mandatory registration for Victorian engineers for which a four-year degree qualification, five years’ relevant experience and an average 50 hours per year of continuing professional development activity are expected to be required.

“Queensland is the only state with a compulsory registration scheme for the sector and the Victorian Bill is modelled on the Queensland Act to ensure professional mobility between states. We encourage any state considering the regulation of engineers to do likewise in support of national harmonisation,” said IPWEA Victoria CEO David Hallett.

At this stage, it is not known when the Bill will take effect, but with regulations yet to be drafted, the timing is anticipated to be 1 July 2021.

“To help engineers understand their obligations under the legislation, we’re planning special information sessions during our next series of regional workshops,” said Hallett.

Workshop details will be available soon at www.ipwea.org/Victoria.
