Internal Combustion column: What's mine is yours and what's yours is yours!

So, your workshop, fleet administration and mechanical operational buildings are situated within a large depot compound surrounded by other owned assets, facilities and utilities.

Tug-of-war-503865868_1401x752__1_.jpegIt’s the same old story – everybody wants a say but nobody wants to do anything!

Being the proactive manager you are, you decide to improve the depot and facilities to enhance the service you provide and increase your customers' experience. You begin with improving workshop wash off, stormwater flow and treatment and identify and act on areas that could impact on the Environment and Heritage Protection Act, you put up a few traffic management signs in an attempt to direct visitors to the correct area.

None of this is a problem until a less proactive person (read: snoozer) says you have just encroached on assets and resources that sit under their control – even a bolt rolling out of the workshop has just ventured into protected waters – and because other asset custodians were not consulted with, they are not happy Jan!

Yes, it might seem like a logical decision to have all assets under one custodian, but for some people it’s like having someone else look after your child – will they do as good a job as you, do they know them (the assets) inside and out, and will issues be resolved within a reasonable time frame?

I come from a world of one asset custodian or manager (the fleet manager) for depot fleet buildings and workshops, where decisions on the maintenance and improvement plans for all of the buildings and surrounding depot real-estate are made logically and with minimum delay, by someone with the knowledge and experience to do so.

Come on! If you want a say DO SOMETHING! Otherwise, get out of the way so someone who knows how can get the job done!

To stop our Anonymous Fleet Manager (AFM) blowing a gasket, we created Internal Combustion, a monthly column for fleet-related rants that lets him blow off some steam. Got a fleet gripe you'd like to get his opinion on? Email emily.ditchburn@ipwea.org and she'll pass it on to AFM – when he's in a good enough mood, that is.
