Internal Combustion column: 'Clean data' – the buzz words of the decade

Personally, I’m sick of hearing the phrase ‘clean data’, especially when in my travels I see very few fleet departments that are able to actually produce and utilise clean data.

'Clean data' is just another way of saying data you can rely on! Data that does not contain inaccuracies, duplicate records, old or missing information.

Let’s cut through the ‘buzz’ and get to the facts:

If your mission statement includes words like “efficient”, “effective” or “competitive”, then you’re going to need clean data to prove your case and ultimately stay in the fleet business.

It really gets up my nose when I hear fleet personnel say that they don’t have time to follow processes or record critical data elements all of the time.

Let me tell you quite clearly: If discipline is lacking in your business processes and collection of data, you are going to find it very difficult, if not impossible, to prove that you are efficient, effective or competitive, as per your mission statement.

It’s time to step up into the business of modern fleet management.

Prove your worth – I dare you!

To stop our Anonymous Fleet Manager (AFM) blowing a gasket, we created Internal Combustion, a monthly column for fleet-related rants that lets him blow off some steam. Got a fleet gripe you'd like to get his opinion on? Email emily.ditchburn@ipwea.org and she'll pass it on to AFM... when he's in a good enough mood, that is.
