When are the drivers and operators going to start to take responsibility for their actions?
It seems like every day we hear more and more excuses as to why this or that wasn't their fault. Come on; it's time to stand up and be an adult. Do comments like "There was no pole there when I started to back the car in" and “You need to remove that pole so it does not happen again” ring a bell?
Well, it’s time to take some action.
Does your council charge the person or branch for the cost of the repair? What are the consequences of crash a fleet item? Does the driver report the incident it at all? Are the number of crashes and the cost reported to the GM?
If you don’t already you need to put a policy in place that captures the crash information, determine who is at fault, undertake the repair, charge the cost back to the branch or individual and report these things on a cyclic basis the GM.
Now is the time to deal with these 'moving stationary objects'.
To stop our Anonymous Fleet Manager (AFM) blowing a gasket, we created Internal Combustion, a monthly column for fleet-related rants that lets him blow off some steam. Got a fleet gripe you'd like to get his opinion on? Email emily.ditchburn@ipwea.org and she'll pass it on to AFM... when he's in a good enough mood, that is.
