Australia 'must adapt' to global labour shifts

As car makers announce lay-offs and seek subsidies, University of Newcastle economist Bill Mitchell says it is not just the strong Australian dollar that is hurting local manufacturers.

Structural changes in the global workforce mean that once highly-skilled jobs can now be carried out by cheap labour offshore, Mr Mitchell says.
