A new report has described Canada's public infrastructure as being “at risk”, with the age and condition of key infrastructure showing urgent need for long-term renewal.

The research for the Canadian Infrastructure Report Card was compiled from extensive surveys of the 2000 jurisdictions invited to respond. The results show that a significant amount of public infrastructure in Canada is aging and in poor condition, reinforcing the urgent need for long-term investments in renewal.

The 2019 Canadian Infrastructure Report Card was produced by the Association of Consulting Engineering Companies Canada, the Canadian Construction Association, the Canadian Parks and Recreation Association, the Canadian Public Works Association, the Canadian Society for Civil Engineering, the Canadian Urban Transit Association, the Canadian Network of Asset Managers and the Federation of Canadian Municipalities.

“Asset management is relatively new to Canada, but it is making great progress with the support of the Municipal Asset Management Program,” said Nicole Allen, Executive Director of IPWEA affiliate NAMS Canada.

“The MAMP is funded by Infrastructure Canada and delivered by the Federation of Canadian Municipalities. NAMS Canada is a key partnership organisation in the development of the country’s growing capacity to adopt asset management practices. Almost 1,000 municipal staff across Canada have now undertaken the IPWEA Professional Certificate in Asset Management Planning delivered through NAMS Canada.”

In this year’s federal budget, MAMP funding was increased, extending the program to March 2024.
