The City of Kalgoorlie-Boulder has become the first regional local government in Western Australia to join the Climate Council’s Cities Power Partnership, which will see the city commit to five sustainability pledges. 

 
The Cities Power Partnership has invited the City of Kalgoorlie-Boulder to become a founding member of the partnership, which seeks to celebrate and accelerate emissions reduction and clean energy success stories across the country.

City of Kalgoorlie-Boulder CEO John Walker says the partnership is a natural choice for the City, as it already has a significant portfolio of renewable energy assets.

“The City has invested substantially in green energy, with solar PV installations at the airport, admin building, Eastern Goldfields Community Centre, South Boulder Waste Water Treatment Plant and Goldfields Oasis, as well ground source heat pumps and a solar thermal system at the Oasis,” he says. 

“We have also achieved 100% reuse of our treated waste water, and there is a new solar PV installation at the Goldfields Arts Centre which will be going live in the next couple of months. The five pledges, which cover renewable energy, energy efficiency  and increased collaboration and influence, will see the City of Kalgoorlie-Boulder continue as the lead agency for the GVROC’s renewable energy projects and continue to invest in renewable energy technology.

“We will also be undertaking to lobby electricity providers and the State Government to help us overcome barriers to investment to renewable energy locally. We see this as an opportunity help local businesses get their foot in the door with renewable energy, which will also help us achieving key initiatives outlined in the Growing Kalgoorlie-Boulder Plan pertaining to supporting business and industry development, connecting Kalgoorlie-Boulder with the world and providing energy solutions.”
