President's Message

Recent IPWEA member surveys reveal that some of the most significant drivers of member engagement relate to skill-building, career development and role-relevant information provision.

Clearly our members look to us for support to perform their current roles and to equip them for more senior roles in the future, but technical skills alone may not be sufficient to secure a more general management or leadership position.

Last year IPWEA (Vic) piloted a Management Leadership Program to complement its established Engineering Leadership Program. Whilst the Engineering Program addresses topics such as Works Planning, Project Sustainability, Operations and Asset Management, the Management Program covers areas including Strategic Planning, Risk Management, Stakeholder Engagement, Communications and Staff Development.

The objective of the Engineering Program is ‘to develop leading professionals’ and the aim of the Management Program is ‘to develop leading professionals’. A subtle distinction, perhaps, but one that reflects a holistic approach to skill development for traditionally technical specialists. Continuing education ‘for the whole role’.
