Empower Drivers Heavy Vehicle Toolbox Talk

The National Road Safety Partnership Program (NRSPP) offers a collaborative network to support Australian businesses in developing a positive road safety culture. It’s about saving lives without the red tape.

The NRSPP continues to develop their Toolbox Talks initiative, which is an evidence based resource enabling organisations to engage with their workers on key road safety risks. The Toolbox Talks are housed in packages to make it easy for organisations to download vital information from their Knowledge Centre.

One of the new releases is on empowering drivers of heavy vehicles, which is a complex and high-risk professional activity. It features interviews with drivers who provide tips and stories on the importance of building resilience as a professional driver.

The new release also includes a fact sheet, poster, facilitator guide and overview. The fact sheets can be targeted for drivers, organisations or for everyone.

As an example, some of the key recommendations for organisations include:

• Training is a key prerequisite for worker empowerment. Workers do not become empowered on their own.
• Create opportunities for your staff to speak up and support them.
• Your drivers know their business, consult with them on developing new solutions and interventions to keep them safe on the road.
• Communicate clearly that everyone’s contribution to creating a safe supporting work environment is valuable, needed, and expected.
