Who are we?
The Institute of Public Works Engineering Australasia (IPWEA) is a professional organisation providing member services and advocacy for those involved in delivering public works and engineering services to the community. Membership includes organisations and individuals in state, local government and in private industry.
IPWEA promotes professionalism, education and technical knowledge and holds strategic alliances with many other related organisations.
IPWEA is a federation of State Divisions responding to State based issues with an Australasia Office to attend to national and international matters.
The WA Division has an office in Perth and a regional branch in the States south west.
The Division is active in developing and promoting the technical expertise and experience of our members. We are involved in a number of activities to achieve this goal including:
- Representation on key State and Local Government policy making and advisory committees
- Special projects to encourage Local Government best practice
- Organisation of high profile conferences, seminars and training activities to inform our members and other practitioners of the implications of industry best practice and technical standards, as well as changing legislation and emerging issues
- Organisation of special interest panels to provide a forum for members to raise and discuss issues that are of interest and impact upon them in their profession
IPWEA has formed special interest networks, which meet regularly to further develop strategies and innovations in a range of areas.
The Role
The Institute of Public Works Engineering Australasia WA Division (the Institute) is seeking a self-motivated representative to promote the Institute in a variety of environments including industry, career expo’s and conferences and to promote the benefits of being a member of the Institute.
The role is a volunteer position for a 2 year term and you may form a team of up to 3 Ambassadors or operate as a single Ambassador.
As an Ambassador you will be expected to work closely with, and report to, the Institute’s staff in undertaking this role.
You will also be expected to collaborate with other Institute’s representatives at various promotional activities and opportunities.
The Skills
We are seeking a person who is / has been involved with the Institute for a minimum of 3 years, preferably with one of our committees.
The Ambassador will be an advocate for the Institute and be able to articulate the benefits of being a member to a wide variety of audiences in a variety of formats.
It is a condition of application that applicants be a financial individual member of the Institute to be an Ambassador. You can apply to be an Ambassador if your organisation holds Corporate Membership, on the understanding and condition that should you change organisations during your Ambassadorship, that you will take out and maintain individual membership with the Institute.
The Ambassador must have the following skills:
- Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
- Excellent presentation and oratory skills.
- Great management and leadership skills.
- Solid social media presence.
- Confident networking ability
The Expectations
In this role you will be expected to promote the key messaging of the Institute and its membership benefits through a variety of forums which could include but not be limited to:
- Conference attendances and promotions
- Public Works Professional Development Week attendance and promotions
- Career Expos
- Any forum where potential members could be in attendance

Ambassador Categories
There will be three categories of Ambassadors:
- Young IPWEA / Associate Members: Members 35 and under and those with less than 5 years experience in the public works industry
- Members: those with more than 5 years experience in the industry, including Fellows and Emeritus Members
- Retired Members: Senior Members who have retired from full time work but wish to maintain their membership
