The review of Part 1 - Offstreet Parking continues

One of the challenges in reviewing the standard is the balance between setting the minimum requirements and what is needed to be dealt with from a design management perspective.

For example, changes have occurred in use of footpaths - increased number of shared paths (cyclists) and mobility scooters using the footpath. This has an influence on the sight distance requirements as a car approaches the back edge of the footpath - meaning the specification for the minimum splay widths and sight distance needs to account for this use across multiple jurisdictions (each having slightly different legislative requirements).

One of the other implications is the changing nature of the vehicles fleet - increase in longer and wider vehicles needing to be considered in the dimensions for parking spaces and height clearances.

As a consequence, there are a number of changes being considered with the current update to AS2890 Part 1 - when the draft is published for public comment, reviewing and informing yourselves of the content and changes is recommended.
