Joint Event: A Practical Approach to Urban Mobility & Safe Active Streets

Urban mobility is about creating safe, attractive and inclusive places that encourage people to walk, wheel and ride. This interactive three-hour workshop combines presentations, hands-on design activities and a site visit to explore the practical application of Safe Active Streets (SAS).

Participants will first be introduced to the principles, evidence and outcomes of Safe Active Streets, including lessons from Western Australia's pilot program. Working in teams, delegates will then undertake a mini-modelling exercise before progressing to a larger design challenge, where they will develop a Safe Active Street using real-world constraints and opportunities. Designs will be tested using remote-controlled vehicle modelling to assess traffic flow, functionality and user experience.

Following a short networking break, participants will join a guided walking tour of a local Safe Active Street to observe design features and discuss how different treatments influence speed, traffic volumes, comfort and amenity. Facilitated discussion throughout the workshop will explore the strengths and limitations of different design approaches and the balance between engineering, place-making and community outcomes.

Between 2015 and 2023, the Department of Transport and Major Infrastructure (DTMI), in partnership with local governments, planned, delivered and evaluated Safe Active Streets across Western Australia. The program demonstrated how local area traffic management treatments can support effective 30 km/h shared street spaces and encourage more people to walk, wheel and ride. Findings from the recently completed program evaluation are informing the development of Safe Active Street Design Guidance to support future implementation by local governments and practitioners.

Delegates should wear comfortable walking shoes, a hat and bring a water bottle, as the site visit will be conducted on foot.

This workshop is jointly presented by IPWEA WA, the Department of Transport and Major Infrastructure (DTMI) and Engineers Australia.
