Lunch Forum: Safe Active Streets

When:  Sep 27, 2018 from 11:30 to 14:00 (AWST)
Associated with  Western Australia

Safe Active Streets, also known as Bike Boulevards, have become an extremely popular form of traffic management which ‘return’ a street to more of a community use. Generally, they promote cycling on less busy local streets, where speeds are also reduced to 30 km/h through physical means to allow people in cars and on bikes to share the street safely. With lower traffic speeds, streets are also much safer for pedestrians and children, and additional tree planting and landscaping make the environment more attractive places to walk or ride.

The Department of Transport is currently funding a pilot program of Safe Active Streets in various Local Government Areas, and is encouraging all Local Governments to get involved,
however the design principles involved have widespread implications for residential street design that benefit local residents and the community as a whole.

This presentation will give an overview of the development of the Safe Active Street concept, key design features, some lessons learned from the pilot projects and some thoughts
of the presenter on what the future will hold for this type of infrastructure. The presentation will also look at the application of Safe Active Street principles to a regional setting.
