Walker Place lies in Gawler’s Central Urban Precinct and its redevelopment delivers on the community’s vision of creating a space that is not simply a retail strip, but rather, a civic heart of the town – a centre point for place making and community activities.
The project was a true partnership between the Town of Gawler, Wax Designs, Tonkin, Blu Built Constructions, and the community who together delivered a high quality and beautiful public space.
The project has created a positive shift in the thinking of Council staff to public realm and infrastructure development. The concept of a transformable road into a 'pop up' plaza has inspired staff to think outside the square and embrace creative design and the flexible and adaptive use of existing spaces and infrastructure for future projects.
Council was focused on delivering the project as an exemplar Small Business Impact Mitigation Project. Working collaboratively with local businesses from the start of the project, and together with Blu Built, well-considered and practical strategies to minimise impacts to local businesses during project delivery were developed. With the arrival of COVID these approaches were adaptable to further support businesses during the lockdown.
This will be a joint presentation between:
- Whendee Young, Team Leader, Asset Delivery, Town of Gawler
- Paul Simons, Senior Project Manager, Tonkin
- Ryan Sullivan, Project Manager, BluBuilt
Wednesday 14 April 2021, 4.00pm – 5.00pm, via Zoom.
This is a free, online session.
