Writing, Living and Updating Asset Management Plans

Asset Management Plans are a key planning document for organisations which deliver levels of service through assets. Complementary to the Introduction to Asset Management Course, this course is a practical how-to for writing and updating an asset management plan. It covers each topic of the asset management plan in turn - what is needed, linkages to others sections of the plan, good practice examples and how these might relate to different situations.
This course will leave participants with the ability to identify what they should focus on to get the most organisational value from their plan.

Course Outline

  • What is good practice, and how is everyone else doing it?
  • What should I focus on to get the most value into my plans?
  • Legal requirements and how these can be covered in plan
  • What are Office of Auditor General and the auditors looking for?
  • What options are there for format and delivery of AMPs?
  • What organisational resource and structure is required?

Course Objectives

This course will enable you to write, review and/or update asset management plans that:
  • Tell the organisation’s AM story in a logical manner
  • Use language that is appropriate for the reader
  • Support the higher level strategic documents
  • Provide a robust basis for long-term forecasts.
  • Other objectives also include enabling you to:
  • Develop AMPs that address issues and strategic responses identified in the Infrastructure Strategy and weaknesses identified as part of the ICR ratings
  • Develop more efficient AMP updating processes.

  • Asset management as a business process, including IIMM and ISO 55000
  • The linkages between asset management and the organisation’s objectives, and Government’s expectations
  • The relationships between the organisation’s the asset management strategy, the ICT asset management
  • plan (AMP) and other existing ICT plans and strategies
  • Key lifecycle processes including:
  • Defining levels of service and performance management
  • Forecasting and managing demand for ICT services
  • Managing asset registers and asset information
  • Planning for and reporting on asset performance
  • Identifying service-critical assets and systems
  • Financial management and investment
  • Developing the ICT asset management plan
  • Asset Management maturity and Improvement Planning
  • Embedding strategic asset management as a business as usual process
