G'day All
I offer the following for consideration by those Local Authority engineers who have not made up and then closed their minds to the "climate change" debate.
A majority of UN members has a vested interest in claiming that global warming is caused by developed nations. The recent decision at Doha where developed nations are to compensate developing nations for global warming is testament to this. Australia's contribution is predicted to be $3,000,000,000.00 annually.
The current Federal Government has a vested interest in pursuing the "global warming caused by man" furpy. It has enabled it to introduce a tax that will reap billions of dollars of revenue annually, with the vocal support of "global warming" alarmists.
The claim of 3.2mm "recent" rise in the sea level by a "trio of specialists" (read 3, fellow engineers) is hardly a world wide consensus of experts in the field. In any event, even if true, this "recent" rise is not what should be used to extraploate to a situation 90 years hence. Extrapolation from long term recorded tide levels is a more accurate means of guessing what the future may bring. Such extrapolation, when correlated with carbon dioxide levels in the atmosphere, will iron out any bumps that may be occuring at present from natural causes.
The computer prediction is admitted to be 60% in error. I would not like to be designing a bulding using that programme.
Nothing can be done for those who have closed minds. I appeal to those local authority engineers who are prepared to take the effort to research the topic to do so. You may end up forming the same opinion as I have that it is all a "crock of s..t"
Cheers

Bill,
If you read the article carefully with respect to Mr Foster's claim, he has extrapolated the UN data (not the UN) - this is his opinion. Chris is the messenger passing on this information. No need to shoot him. I am glad he presented it and hope he keeps on providing us with information.
The key fact here is that the sea level has risen (by 3.2mm). The other interesting piece of the article (to me and should be to you) is that the UN model used in 2007 was 50% out on its forecasts. This opens up a debate that you should like on the validity of the model. At least they are publishing the results. I assume the model is being revised on a regular basis (as more and more information/KPIs are available).
I am looking forward to the "IPCC's fifth assessment report will be published in three volumes, in September 2013, March 2014 and April 2014".
My key reason in responding to this discussion is that local government does need to consider this issue (like it would any other) and cannot be driven by biassed opinions (on either side) - facts and not fiction need to be the driver.

With due respect, Chris, the claim is a "crock of s..t"
The facts do not show this. Any engineer knows that you can't take a trend that is 20mm long and extrapolate to a metre. This as what these ratbags are doing.
We as engineers must research all of the facts before we form an opinion. When we do so we must be very certain of our facts before we advise or influence others. It is FACT that opinions are divided on climate change. Many opposing the politically correct view are renowned scientists. It is also FACT that actual tidal records do not correlate with the scaremongering that is going around.
Whilst it is good to consider all eventualities. It is not, in my opinion, good for Local Authorities to enact policies that will have serious lifestyle and economic impact on its ratepayers.

SEA levels are rising 60 per cent faster than the UN's climate panel forecast in its most recent assessment, scientists report.
