    Hi everyone,

Last week was the IPWEA International Conference in Darwin, and it was fantastic. We had 35 Under 35 delegates (out of over 400) there, with a number of them presenting impressive papers. Definitely room to increase the numbers for Rotorua 2015!

At the conference we had the opportunty to showcase Young IPWEA through speeches and two panel sessions. Both panel sessions were very successful with the crowd becoming very involved. A number of areas which we need to work on, as an industry, were highlighted and they also provided us some further challenges.

New Zealand has also now officially joined IPWEA! The 'A' now changed to be Australasia. Young IPWEA will be launched officially into New Zealand after the Young IPWEA committee meeting in November, however we have already started promoting the group into NZ. It is fantastic to be able to now welcome the NZ crew as part of IPWEA!

There are a couple of items which the national comittee will be working on in the next couple of months to keep the momentum which we have gained off of the conference. A revision of the Young IPWEA framework will be undertaken to incorporate NZ; also an action plan for the next two years will be drafted to set in stone some goals to be presented to the Australasian board. I will try to have a summary of this available for comment over the next few weeks before it is presented. Should you have any ideas please feel free to discuss them here or contact me directly.

For those who were at the conference in Darwin, I encourage you to share your experiences of the week for those who were unable to attend. Also, start writing those business cases for Rotorua 2015 :-)

Please encourage all the young professionals to become involved in the group and to sign up to the Young IPWEA Community of Practice.

    Cheers

Dear Kym and everyone associated with the Darwin Conference. Congratulations for such a sterling effort and placing younger members on centre stage. It was impressive to witness and reassuring to know that the future is strong with such talented and passionate members embracing the IPWEA family. IPWEA NSW will shortly announcing a new initiative to encourage younger members and build upon the good will experienced by all at Darwin. Keep up the great work. ------------------------------------------- John Roydhouse Chief Executive Officer IPWEA (NSW) Division Sydney NSW -------------------------------------------

    Kym,

I echo John's sentiments and while I couldn't attend I tried as best I could to follow along on the Twitter feed.

I also look forward to seeing what your new initiative is John!

    Cheers,
    Will

    Hi all,

I was lucky enough to have the wonderful opportunity to attend the IPWEA conference in Darwin. And from what I saw, what a fantastic experience it was.

The young IPWEA and "more mature" member panel with Kim Segwick and Anthony McMahon representing young public works professionals created some great discussion for all member to consider including raising the profile of young public works professionals not only in local government but also in the wider community.

If you all get s chance to read some papers from the conference, do so! With the next national conference in Rotorua, now is the time to get our heads together and create some great young member papers to present. Not sure what is involved but might be something to work towards for Rotorua but recording podcasts of the key note speaker sessions could be beneficial. Any thoughts?

[IPWEA CEO Note: Thanks Bec for your comments and participation in the conference. We did undertake some limited video recordings of some sessions including some keynote sessions at the conference. We will be going through these over coming weeks and see what we can make available. As a teaser, hopefully everyone has checked out the summary video of the conference here. CC.]

    Best wishes

    Bec
