G'day Mark & Lisa,
From previous discussions with our RSO's we have about the same level of enforcement or non enforcement as Lismore.
We have, however had one particular problem & I may have mentioned tis before to you Mark where we had a very new school. This school had only one parking space for the disabled. At thi sparticular school we had a teacher with a disbility as well as a student. I think that there may also have been a student's mother that had a disability. They were all claiming rights to this one space.
Hope this helps.
cheers

Thanks Lisa for your comments. Subsequent to my first request about requirements for disabled parking facilities in schools, I did get some subsequent advice from one of my old contacts (former architect at a metropolitan Council:
- Public schools in NSW are regulated by the Infrastructure SEPP 2007 (I SEPP). I SEPP does not appear to require provision for disabled parking. There is a Department of Planning issues paper on this SEPP relating to parking provisions but does not address facilities for the disabled.
- Private Education establishments would be required to be built in compliance with the Building Code of Australia (BCA). The BCA requires 1 space for disabled parking in every 100 spaces or part thereof. This is waived if there are less than 5 spaces provided.
- Australian Standards which apply to Parking for the disabled are AS 2890.1 and AS 2890.6
I'm learning something new every day!

Hi Mark
In relation to your request for additional information please find below responses in relation to the Lismore LGA.
1. School zone restrictions are enforced to a certain extent but with limited Police it is difficult to cover all school zones. Those schools with the flashing lights installed are definitely benefiting by a reduction in speeds through the school zones.
2. In relation to lack of parking facilities for people with disabilities, this can be of concern however we generally deal with these on a case by case basis through our Traffic Advisory Committee. In most cases have been able to resolve any issues of this nature as they arise. Solutions are designed in conjunction with the relevant school; however this does often involve the installation of new or additional accessible parking bays & infrastructure.
Kind Regards

Thanks to all of you who assisted with our submission to the NSW Staysafe Committee on School safety zones. For your information, I have attached a copy of our submission. I appeared before the committee on 21 November. The Staysafe Committee has asked several additional questions:
- In the areas which you deal with, do you believe that school zone restrictions are suitably enforced?
- Your submission includes a comment from one of your members on problems caused by lack of parking facilities for people with disabilities:
- In your experience, is this a serious problem?
- Do you know of current requiremnts for providing parking facilities for people with disabilities in schools.
Can you help with your views colleagues?
When given permission by the Staysafe Committee I will share the final reports etc.
