We are about to do a mall upgrade and are desiring to use stone flagstones as one of the paving materials.

Has anyone used stone pavers of nominally 400 x 400  in a public space situation subject to commercial vehicle loads (3 tonne axle load)?

    What has been your experience?

What construction detail have you used?

    Thanks

    Niall

    Niall

We have recently constructed space using 600x300x40mm granite pavers that can be used for commercial vehicle access. The space has only been open for about 7 months and it appears to be functioning really well so far.

We laid the pavers on 12-15mm mortar bedding with a "Dynex" additive on a 150mm depth RC Base.

Happy to provide further details if you require them.

    Hi Niall,

Recently completed a shopping centre streetscape using 300x300x40 pavers with exposed ag concrete infill.  Similar to Theo, pavers were laid in mortar on a 150mm deep RC beam (F62 mesh) which we beefed up to a double layer of mesh at vehicle crossings to try and mitigate future maintenance problems.  This is virtually our standard main road vehicle crossing specification with the paver laid on top of it.

A shopping centre just near our office has recently replaced all their external paving, which I suspect is due to slips and falls in wet conditions.  This is my main concern, and experience throughout Melbourne CBD, that the honed granite stone products can be very slippery with certain footwear when wet.  If it is going to be exposed to rain, worth checking for certification that the stone pavers meet the 2013 update to AS4586.

    Good luck!

    Niall,

We used a 40mm Aust granite paver in one of our town squares. It was laid on a 30mm 5:1 dry sand/cement mix. Pavers were pre and post laid sealed.

The paver was Austral Black with an exfoliated finish for grip. From memory they 65mpa and we have driven a fire truck on them.

Dont use sandstone because it is too porous and you will have ongoing stain problems regardless of sealing done at construction. You can seal sandstone every year, but that is a pretty big ask of your maintenance budget and also requires you to close the paved area to public access.

Been down for two years and no problenms.

    Cheers Ben
