    Good Morning All,
Can anyone recommend a practice note or reference to assist in the condition assessment of bridges? Preferably with photographs?

    Thank you in advance

You might find the VicRoads Road Structures Inspection Manual helpful. Other state roads authorities also publish bridge inspection guidelines that might help too.

Austroads made a good publication in 2018 called "guide to bridge technology Part 7: maintenance and management of existing bridges"

Which essentially is a compendium of what each state authority does and is a good place to start.

    Hi Daniel,

Being that you are in NSW you're probably best served by referring to the RTA Bridge Inspection Procedure Manual.

Toowoomba Regional Council bridge and culvert inspections are conducted in accordance with the Department of Transport and Main Roads (DTMR) Structure Inspection Manual (SIM), which superseded the Bridge Inspection Manual in 2016.  There are three levels of inspection and reporting:

    • Level 1 - Routine Maintenance
    • Level 2 - Condition Rating.  Visual inspection.  Includes rating of components and overall rating of structure.
    • Level 3 - Special Inspection
    Hope this helps.

    Daniel,
We have copied the Level 1 Inspection report on to a tablet and use the tablet for the photograpghs.
Private companies could do the same for you, example if your Council use Refelct from Asset Edge they could make the inspction 'Form" for you. The form is an easy way to colllect the data on site and you will have a database of the data as well.
