YIPWEA Xmas get-together

  • 1.  YIPWEA Xmas get-together

    Posted 25-11-2013 17:11
    Hi All,

I was speaking to a few different people here at Blacktown and the question came up of whether some sort of Christmas party or end of year get-together was something that the YIPWEA would do or has done in the past. I thought I would post the question to see if it is an option the younger crowd would be interested in? If something was organised I believe it would be a good opportunity to network and possibly to encourage non-members in joining.

    What are your thoughts?

Hi Christopher, I think its a good idea, not only to network but to recap and relfect on, for everyone one no doubt, would have been a big year! Does anyone have any out of the ordinary/ challenging/ down right cool projects going on at the moment that could be viewed/ visited then follow up with a relaxing get together? ------------------------------------------- Rebecca Jane Clothier Trainee Engineer Boorowa Council BOOROWA NSW -------------------------------------------

    Hi Chris, Rebecca and all,

I agree and think it is a great idea to get together and to encourage non-members to come along. It is also worth noting that there is currently an offer to new YIPWEA members to receive free membership for the six month period between 01 January 2014 to 30 June 2014. I will definitely encourage my young colleagues to take advantage of this.

Speaking of cool projects Rebecca, we have the new Wet and Wild Sydney about to open for business in the Blacktown LGA. I would like to put the question out there... how many YIPWEA members would be interested in having a guided tour? I would like to try to make this possible if members are interested. Although the timing might not work in with a Christmas get together Chris but I'm sure we can work something out.

    Afternoon Suzanne et al.

I'd definitely be interested in going on a tour of the park if one could be arranged. With enough notice the distance shouldn't be a problem so long as it was on a Friday or Monday.

Thanks also for raising the current NSW offer of YIPWEA membership; there's a few I know who would do well to take advantage of it and I'll make sure they get it.

    Cheers,
    Will

    Hi Sue,

That sounds like a great idea! Would the guided tour involve trying all the rides? :)

With regards to a general end of year catch up; I'm not sure about other people but our lead in to Christmas is pretty busy, I think sometime in early-mid January would be better.  You could combine it with a discussion on what NSW YIPWEA wants to achieve in 2014.

    Cheers

This sounds like an excellent idea, I tend to agree with Josh that after xmas, early January might be better???

    Chris/Sue
would you be interested in being involved in organising something with John Roydhouse, incorporating visit to wet and wild and perhaps a meeting/some social drinks afterwards.

Not sure what everyone else thinks about a day but I personally would prefer a Saturday and it may help others in not having to try and get time off work, what about 4th or 11th January?

    Hi Anthony,

We are currently in the process of contacting representatives of Wet & Wild to help arrange a tour and possible times/dates. I would definitely be interested in organising this (NSW) event with John which I think could include social drinks afterwards.

It seems like there is alot of interest based off this forum (and including non-members here at Blacktown). What I think might be a good idea is if everyone helps spread the word at your place of work just to get a rough idea/number of people who would be interested in coming (possibly in January next year) and to contact either myself or Sue. I shall get into contact with John with accordingly.

I second that Anthony, just a tad later in the month maybe. It is common (I for one will be doing it) to wrap up the Christmas/NY period with a couple of weeks of leave which will only see people returning to work early January. To take another day or two (even if it is on a Saturday) might be stretching the friendship with work. And I would certainly want every opportunity to meet as many fellow YIPWEA'ers as possible and to take advantage of John's kind offer! ------------------------------------------- William Barton Deputy Engineer Junee Shire Council JUNEE NSW -------------------------------------------

    Good Morning Christopher and Rebecca

I think a YIPWEA get together would be a great idea.
Certainly the NSW office is willing to assist in this regard and may even contribute towards some hospitality costs.

If there is strong support please give Michelle or myself a call.

    2 questions.

    1. Where is the offer for 6 month free membership found?
    2. Would you like to have similar XMAS party for QLD YIPWEA members?

    Hi All,

Just letting everyone know that both Sue and myself have been in contact with the appropriate Wet & Wild representatives in relation to the possibility of having a guided tour. They have expressed that a guided tour would be something they could accommodate, however they advised us that they have their grand opening in a few days and hence may not be able to go ahead with it until late Jan/ early Feb next year.

This may work out better as most people should generally return from their holidays around this time. I shall keep everyone updated as we go.

In any case, there has been a lot of interest generated and I'm really looking forward to meeting/catching up with everyone!

That's excellent to hear Christopher. For what it's worth I agree that a late Jan/early Feb timing would probably suit more people; what's more, if we can hold it on a Friday or Saturday (preferably the latter) it would also suit a lot of us from the regional areas of the State.

    Cheers,

Hi Everyone, I hope this proposal gets enough support to proceed, I think I could send three from Lachlan. To get a technical tour plus the chance to hold a strategy meeting for 2014 would great. Now that I'm 36, do I still get a start? You might be able to organise for Friday 24 Jan but it's still school holidays and probably quite busy at the park The first Friday or Saturday in Feb might be the best date to try for. I'm with Will on setting the day as a Saturday but I guess it's got to work for Wet'n'wild. Hi Everyone, I hope everyone had an enjoyable break over the Christmas and New Years period. Just posting an update regarding the possible technical tour at Wet n Wild. We have been in contact with the owners of the theme park and they have advised us that they can accommodate a technical tour for us this February! I shall post more details as they are confirmed so please keep watch of this forum. One thing they did mention was that the tour day could only be on a Friday (weekends for them are very busy). As a side note, Sue and myself have spread the word here at Blacktown Council and we know of at least 7 more engineers who have expressed an interest in this tour; and as a result, have signed up with the IPWEA. Lastly, I think it would be a fantastic idea if the YIPWEA could arrange a get together on an annual basis. What are your thoughts? I know a group of us here at Blacktown would be keen for that to happen. ------------------------------------------- Christopher Wahbe Blacktown City Council BLACKTOWN NSW -------------------------------------------

    Hi Everyone,

I just wanted to say thank you to everyone that made the trip to the NSW YIPWEA event at Wet n Wild Sydney. The overall vibe suggested that it was a successful day (despite the weather) and i hope everyone got a lot of the tour and the networking afterwards.

Special thanks goes to Karl Anderson from Wet n Wild for taking us around the park; who i thought was very informative, and to Emily Rankine for coming as the IPWEA representative. Also, thanks to Sue Hickman who was did most of the organising with Wet n Wild; it wouldn't of been a successful day without her help.

We are in the process of writing a short report on the event so keep an eye out on that.

I believe, as YIPWEA members, we should catch up more often with events like this. If you have a significant development in your area or just wish to catch up i strongly suggest you contact the IPWEA to arrange some sort of get together.

I know personally i got a lot out of the day and hope everyone enjoyed it and we catch up again soon.

    Chris,

I think a collective thank you to yourself and Sue on organising the day is well deserved (if you failed to organise good weather for it). It was certainly a valuable opportunity to discuss matters and obtain a perspective not only from larger city councils, but also from other organisations and the private sector.

I hope the next one will be regional; I'll certainly be keeping it in the back of my mind and encourage all those out there to do the same.
