    Hello,

Wondering what you might have planned for Engineering Week this year??   Any ideas you'd like to share?  And later on, any pics or stories would be good to post as well.   We are involved in Canstruction in Brisbane with EA and Consult Australia.   Hopefully the Branches and regional councils will get involved in local activities.   So, let us know please and share your ideas.

    Thanks, Suzanna

I don't think we will be doing anything in engineers week itself this year. We did have local year 10 students come to Council yesterday and we took them down to the chambers for a talk and Q&A session. The reason for doing it now rather than eng week was that they are about to select their subjects for their final 2 years of school, so it was a good opportunity to provide some guidance on what might assist if they did choose to do engineering.

The session went quite well, or at least it seemed to and we won't know for sure until we get feedback from the school.

We had our trainee admin officer, apprentice plant operator and apprentice mechanic do a facilitated Q&A session talking about what they do work and training wise, how they got into and what the future might hold for them.
Next we had our 3rd year uni work experience student (studying mechanical eng at UOW) do a similar thing and it was valuable to have him speak having only spent 2 and a half weeks in local government.

We then had our trainee engineer do a short presentation on her path to where she is and what she enjoys most about her job (if you read this thanks again Bec).

At the end myself and our works and services engineer Adam did a bit of a wrap up on why we chose engineering and asked a few questions of the students about what they hope to get out of a career and to try convince them that engineering can offer everything you could want in a career.
I forgot to mention that at the beginning we did an intro on what lg is, how we fit with other levels of gov and the role of councillors.

Overall I think it went well and we are lucky here to have a good crew who are all passionate about promoting LG, engineering and supporting local kids.

    Hi

I was thinking about organising something similar to what Anthony McMahon did in his Council. Please suggest if you are doing anything simple in your region as well, will give me some ideas.
