    Hi everyone,

Does anyone happen to know where I can find detailed definitions on the functional roles and responsibilities within the AM system. I want to start the task of aligning position descriptions to asset management functional positions and would like to see some definitions of what each role is responsible for. I've listed some of the roles below. If anyone knows where these are defined in any of the standards/ IIMM or is willing to share their own then I would be very grateful!

    Thanks in advance!!

    Hi Paul,

The new IPWEA Asset Management 101 Digital Badge - as I understand it - covers exactly this topic. I haven’t completed the badge myself , but my team mate already has. There was a very complete table she showed me from the badge content that listed out the critical AM roles and an assessment of the skill sets required for each role.
The alternative to this would be looking towards getting a full Asset Management Maturity Assessment undertaken for your organisation. If you have a council or company that is totally committed to developing and supporting advanced Asset Management it is definitely worth considering. It is a great way to establish your baseline strengths and weaknesses. It also helps identify and prioritise addressing the gaps in what you currently do, and provide the evidence to support an improvement plan which could include staffing roles/levels.
Hope that helps a wee bit!

    Hi Andy,

I have not yet come across this Digital Badge in Aus. Do you know if its only a NZ thing? Interested to find out a bit more about it if you have any links to it.

    Thanks,

    Hello Paul,
Also have a look at ISO 55k as it has a competency framework.

Thanks Anne. Ive had a look through ISO55k series already. Unfortunately it doesn't go into enough detail for my purposes. Although, Im keen to see what ISO55010 has in store. I suspect it may have some information on the functional roles.

I think each organisation is going to be different depending on its structure. There will always be functional elements shared between roles etc.

    Thanks again,

    P

    Hi Paul,

Just to let you know of some of the work currently happening in Canada. IPWEA and its affiliate NAMS Canada are working with the Canadian Network of Asset Managers (CNAM) and other national associations in Canada on developing an AM Competency Framework for Canadian Communities (AMCF), which includes a description of functional areas and some roles in AM for public sector organizations. The AMCF will be publicly available for a worldwide audience in January 2020. The latest draft identifies 10 AM functional areas (Asset Management (dedicated), Senior Leadership, Engineering, O&M, Planning, Finance, HR, Procurement / Supply Chain, Information & Records, and IT/IS) and 3 generic roles under the dedicated asset management functional area (AM Manager, AM Project Manager / Advisor, AM Coordinator / Analyst).

So keep an eye out early next year for the Competency Framework. I hope that helps.

    Hi Nicole,

thanks for this. Ill keep an eye out for the AMCF.

I do think that functional role definitions are critical to start to help people understand where they sit within the overall Asset Management System.

    Thanks again,

    P

The WPiAM (https://www.wpiam.com/ ) are also launching a world wide certification scheme and there is a designations paper out, with more to come (intended launch is in January), at this stage the paper is probably a bit high level for your current needs, but no harm in seeing how what you are doing might fit in.

    Cheers
