Asset management was the missing part of the puzzle for Cabonne Shire Council’s Water and Sewer Engineer Sogol Ghobad.

In order to progress within the council, she realised that she needed to learn how to develop an asset management plan.

“In engineering, nowadays, asset management is a crucial area,” she told PWPro. “Engineers and other public works professionals need to understand that - so I really needed to know more.”

Ghobad did not have someone within her organisation to turn to for asset management training so she turned to IPWEA on recommendation from her colleagues.

“My colleagues took the first of the online Professional Certificate in Asset Management Planning courses offered last year and recommended it to me,” she said.

The online course is delivered in eight modules over 11 weeks. Participants can interact with presenters and other participants during online ‘live’ sessions and are required to complete coursework to achieve the accreditation.

“All my questions were answered during the course,” said Ghobad. “The most significant thing about the course was I was able to prepare an asset management plan on my own as part of the course.”

Learning how to develop an asset management plan gave Ghobad the skills she needed to progress within the council - and since completing the course she has been promoted.

She attributes her success directly to her completing the IPWEA online course.

“I never thought that I could learn so much by the end of the course. I gained a lot of knowledge in such a short time,” she said.
