Our recent Engineers Registration Act webinar raised several queries around the need for people managing engineering staff, projects or information to be registered.

Based on Guidelines published by Consumer Affairs Victoria, a professional engineering service must be performed by a registered professional engineer unless the person providing the service is acting under the supervision of a registered engineer or working to a prescriptive standard. An unregistered person can’t undertake or sign-off on engineering work done by another unregistered person unless the work was based on a prescriptive standard. If not, a registered engineer must be part of the value chain.

It’s encouraging to see many of our members applying their mind to the questions raised by the Registration Act and to hear about the work being done by some Councils to assess the organisational impact of the legislation in preparation for its introduction. It’s also become a hot topic at our Regional Group Huddles so contact david.hallett@ipwea.org to arrange yours!

Note that submissions in relation to the documents released for comment by Consumer Affairs Victoria are due by 7 October so don’t miss the opportunity to have your say. We’re keen to hear from you and welcome comments to vic@ipwea.org.

In governance news, our Annual General Meeting will be held at 5:00pm on 15 October as part of our Leadership Forum which this year provides a chance for members to e-meet the IPWEA Victoria Board. The Agenda is below and registration is available here for this free member event...I look forward to your company.
