Everyone thinks they’re a fleet manager

Well, let me tell ya something!

Just because you’ve got a couple of cars and a mower at home doesn’t make you a fleet practitioner! Just like organising a plumber to unblock your sink doesn’t make you a facilities manager.

Contemporary fleet management is about a structured and methodical approach to ensuring an organisations investment in fleet assets delivers important business goals. It’s about efficiency through optimised expenditure. It’s about business assurance through effective regulatory compliance. It’s about bringing together various disciplines like finance, procurement, project management, technical and human relations, to deliver positive outcomes.

The trouble is we’re a modest lot (even if I do say so myself), so others don’t necessarily know the risks we’ve mitigated and the disasters we’ve averted.

It’s not about blowing our own trumpet, but we need to share more information about the state of the fleet, our challenges, the associated corporate risks and so on to bring people on the journey. Only then will our colleagues and senior management be in a position to appreciate our contribution and support us in our endeavours.

To stop our Anonymous Fleet Manager (AFM) blowing a gasket, we created Internal Combustion, a monthly column for fleet-related rants that lets him blow off some steam. Got a fleet gripe you'd like to get his opinion on? Email the editor who will pass it on to AFM... when he's in a good enough mood, that is.
