Internal Combustion column: Thou shalt not covet thy neighbour's fleet

Don’t you hate it when Charlie wants what Johnny has?

Spy-glass-675330500_1228x857.jpegIn fleet management we see this regularly. It riles me when some of our internal customers see someone has something new that is bigger and brighter – and suddenly, they need it too! Why is this so? Is it the culture we're working in? Is it the mindset of the different generations? Is it giving the staff too much input into their requirements?

Poor management of these situations can escalate into bigger issues like 'kingdom building' and this can equate to a very needy, precious workforce. How do people deal with these issues? Sometimes being patient won’t cut the mustard!

Being in fleet procurement can sometimes be very frustrating; we don’t have the right to judge or tell others how to do their business, but if the wheel isn’t broken, why do we need to change how this happens?

Phew! Got that off my chest.

To stop our Anonymous Fleet Manager (AFM) blowing a gasket, we created Internal Combustion, a monthly column for fleet-related rants that lets AFM blow off some steam. Got a fleet gripe you'd like to get AFM's opinion on? Email emily.ditchburn@ipwea.org and she'll pass it on.
