The Victorian Government has announced a new digital strategy it says will improve the way infrastructure projects are defined, delivered and maintained.

The system will be rolled out in 2019 across all relevant government agencies and will include both digital engineering (DE) and building information modelling (BIM).

Developed by Victorian Chief Engineer Dr Collette Burke and the Office of Projects Victoria, it’s believed VDAS will assist in delivering the state’s $78.9 billion in capital projects due to commence in the coming year.

Burke said VDAS would enable data to be effectively and efficiently transferred through all stages of a project and into the asset’s life.

“The VDAS is a best practice approach – supporting cost savings, improved productivity, managing project risks, improved collaboration and better project and community outcomes,’ she said.

Treasurer Tim Pallas said, “We’re delivering the biggest infrastructure pipeline in Victoria’s history – so it’s vital that we employ a consistent Digital Engineering and Building Information Modelling approach.

“It’ll help build the infrastructure we need in a smarter, quicker and often cheaper way – which is great news for our economy, productivity and jobs.”

The state government is also supporting the development of new TAFE courses in BIM.
