The Queensland Government will soon require the use of Building Information Modelling (BIM) on all new government construction projects with estimated capital costs exceeding $50 million.

Minister for State Development, Manufacturing, Infrastructure and Planning Cameron Dick said the new policy will help improve the way government infrastructure is designed, constructed and used.

“BIM is a ‘win-win’ for designers, builders, asset managers, and all stakeholders helping us deliver the government infrastructure we all need and use,” he said.

“It’s a collaborative and productive way of working that will help us to better design, construct, manage and operate the assets that we build. This will ultimately de-risk projects by improving their on-time and on-budget delivery, as well as reduce work place health and safety issues.”

“Our leading approach to the digital design and delivery of Queensland’s public infrastructure is front and centre, particularly for our number one infrastructure project – Cross River Rail.”

The Digital Enablement for Queensland Infrastructure – Principles for BIM Implementation policy will be progressively applied on all major new government construction projects by 2023.
