Four of Tasmania’s brightest young public works engineers are set to bring new ideas and practices to their communities thanks to a $14,000 grant program to attend the industry’s leading international conference in Perth later this month.

Callum Pearce-Rasmussen of Brighton Council, Patrick McGuire of Kingborough Council, Bill Hanley of Hobart City Council and Liam Seymour of the City of Launceston will attend the International Public Works Conference after being awarded $3500 in conference registration, travel and accommodation grants by the Tasmanian Division of the Institute of Public Works Engineering (IPWEA).

The grants program enhances the skills of young engineers working in local government and other public works organisations, with funds made available from the Tasmanian Division’s Public Works Engineering Foundation.

Tasmanian Division Directors were impressed by the number and calibre of grant nominations received.

“In their application, grant recipients had to propose what they intended to learn from the conference and how it will enhance their skills and their workplace,” said Tasmanian Division President, Gary Neil.

“There was a lot of interest in conference’s smart city content and how technology could be applied locally to improve asset monitoring and maintenance. The recipients all demonstrated a passion for developing knowledge and skills, and a commitment to advancing public works standards at their work and in their communities.”

In their applications, the engineers also referred to the conference’s potential to connect them with public works professionals from around the globe and the opportunity that provided to discuss different approaches to common engineering issues.

The four recipients reflect the diversity of roles and skills required within public works engineering, and include a project engineer, GIS officer, building asset manager and hydraulics engineer.

On return from the conference, the engineers will make a presentation to IPWEA Tas members outlining what they have learned and how they can apply that knowledge.

The IPWEA International Public Works Conference will be held in Perth from 20 – 23 August.
